Effects and Side Effects of HemodialysisHemodialysis is the most common blood purification technic for kidney failure or ESRD patients. When kidneys can’t work properly, hemodialysis may be needed to sustain patients’ life. Meanwhile, hemodialysis also causes some side effects. Today, you can know effects and side effects of hemodialysis here.

Effects of hemodialysis

Of course, not all kidney failure patients need to undergo hemodialysis. Only when patients’ kidney function declines to 15% or less or they have severe complications such as acidosis and hyperkalemia, do patients need to begin hemodialysis.

With the principle of semipermeable membrane, hemodialysis uses a man-made membrane to replace part of kidney function, even though it isn’t as effective as healthy kidneys. Through exchanging the waste products in blood with nutritions in dialyzate, Hemodialysis can help not only cleanse patients’ blood but also restore the proper balance of electrolyte and fluid in blood.

Even though hemodialysis can help extend kidney failure patients’ life expectancy, it still lead to a series of side effects.

Side effects of hemodialysis

Some side effects are caused by insufficient hemodialysis, while some others are caused by the limitations of hemodialysis.

- Low blood pressure: It is the most common complication of hemodialysis, and its incidence is about 20%-40%. Too much fluid removed from the body during one dialysis treatment is the leading cause.

- Dialysis imbalance syndrome: Nausea, vomiting, cramps, dizziness, etc, may be the signs of this side effect.

- Muscle cramp: Leg, ankle and feet cramps may occur during or after hemodialysis. If you have this problem, tell your doctor or nurses timely.

- Infections: Infections occur easily if a central venous access catheter is used for people on hemodialysis.

- Cardiovascular disease: Some of them may be life threatening like heart failure.

There are many side effects of hemodialysis. If you are experiencing one or more the above mentioned, you should take treatments to manage them immediately, to prevent worse problems.
