Stage 1-2 of chronic kidney disease

The stages of chronic kidney disease are measured by glomerular filtration rate (GFR). In CKD stage 1, the GFR is normal or greater than 90ml/min, and in stage 2, GFR is 60-89ml/min. Kidney function is normal in stage 1 and mildly decrease in stage 2.
There are no symptoms to indicate the damaged kidney function, because kidneys can do a good job even when kidneys can’t function at 100%. So, most people don’t know they get CKD in stage 1-2. They may find the disease when they test for another disease, such as diabetes or high blood pressure (the two main leading causes of CKD).

Other ways people may find they are in chronic kidney disease include:

High cretinine or urea level in the blood.
Blood urine or bubbly urine.
MRI, CT scan, ultrasound or contrast X-ray tests for kidneys.
A family history of polycystic kidney disease.
CKD can’t be cured. What we can do is to slow down the progression of kidney damage. Person with CKD stage 1-2 needs to live a healthy lifestyle. There are some recommendations for people in stage 1-2 of CKD.

1.Eat a healthy diet.

Eating a variety of grains, fresh fruits and vegetables.
The salt and sugar intake should be limited. Too much salt or sugar will cause high blood.
pressure or diabetes, and they will damage your kidney function.
The daily protein intake should follow the standard of the Daily Reference Intake (DRI) level depending on the illness condition.
Keeping a healthy weight, limiting the calories intake everyday is also necessary for a kidney healthy.
Proper vitamin and mineral intake is to keep the electrolyte balance of the body.
Potassium and phosphorus are usually not restricted unless blood levels are above normal.

2.Control your blood pressure at a normal and healthy level.

125/75 for those with diabetes
130/85 for non-diabetes and non-proteinuria
125/75 for non-diabetes with proteinuria

3.Control the blood sugar or diabetes in a normal level.

Diabetes can cause chronic kidney disease. If your blood sugar is higher than normal level for a long time and you don’t control it, your kidney function may reduce quickly.

4.Have regular checkups.

If you get CKD, you’d better have regular checkups to know your illness conditions exactly. This will help you have a effective treatment.

5.You should follow the advices of your doctor to take medicines.

6.Proper exercise is helpful for your disease.

7.Stop smoking.

The CKD is not as terrible as you imagined. We can defeat it if we follow the advices above and keep a healthy lifestyle. Person with CKD in stage 1-2 should keep a common mind and have the confidence to fight with the disease.
